Chelsea Interested in Want-away Manchester United Wonderkid JJ Gabriel

Chelsea are reportedly keeping tabs on Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, after the highly-rated 15-year-old formally requested to leave Old Trafford.

Gabriel's situation has attracted widespread attention after reports that the youngster and his representatives submitted a request for his registration to be cancelled with immediate effect. Manchester United are understood to be surprised by the decision and remain hopeful of resolving the situation.

Who Is JJ Gabriel?

Gabriel, who joined Manchester United's academy at the age of 11, has rapidly emerged as one of the club's most highly rated young players.

The London-born forward previously spent time in the youth systems of Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham before moving to Manchester United in 2022. He won United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season after an impressive campaign with the Under-18s.

He has also made appearances around United's first-team setup and scored a hat-trick in his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah's Under-19 side.

Why Does JJ Gabriel Want to Leave Manchester United?

The exact reason behind Gabriel's decision has not been publicly confirmed.

Sky Sports reports that Manchester United officials are "mystified" by the request, while other reports have pointed to issues in the relationship between Gabriel's family and the club.

The situation developed despite United having involved Gabriel in first-team plans. He trained with the senior squad and featured during pre-season, while he had reportedly been expected to be involved against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

Gabriel also removed Manchester United-related content from his Instagram account shortly before the request became public. However, reports have not established a definitive reason for his decision.

Chelsea Monitoring Gabriel's Situation

Chelsea's reported interest is particularly notable given Gabriel's previous time in the club's academy.

However, his immediate future remains unresolved. Premier League rules state that cancelling a youth registration requires agreement between the club, player and parent or carer, with the league able to make a decision if an agreement cannot be reached. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17.

For now, Chelsea are among several clubs reportedly monitoring the situation as Manchester United attempt to resolve the dispute surrounding one of their most promising academy prospects.
